Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use the Japanese Name Gen?
Simply click the "Generate Name" button on the home page. A new, random, and culturally authentic Japanese name will be generated for you, complete with its Kanji, Hiragana (pronunciation), and meaning. You can keep clicking until you find one you love!
What do "Kanji," "Hiragana," and "Romaji" mean?
  • Kanji (漢字): These are the logographic characters used in Japanese writing, originating from Chinese characters. Each character has a specific meaning.
  • Hiragana (ひらがな): This is a phonetic script that represents syllables. It's used to write the pronunciation of the Kanji.
  • Romaji: This is the romanization of the Japanese language, allowing you to read the pronunciation using the English alphabet.
Can I save the names I like?
Yes! Click the heart icon (♡) next to any generated name to save it to your Favorites. You can view all your saved names on the Favorites page, where you can also copy or remove them.
How does the English to Japanese Name Converter work?
Our Name Converter tool uses a phonetic algorithm to transliterate the sounds of your English name into Japanese Katakana (カタカナ), which is the script typically used for foreign words. It provides the closest phonetic equivalent, not a direct translation.
Is the pronunciation feature accurate?
The pronunciation feature uses your browser's built-in Text-to-Speech engine with a Japanese voice profile. While it provides a very good approximation of standard Japanese pronunciation, slight variations may exist compared to a native speaker.
Can I use these names for my book/game/character?
Absolutely. The names are generated from real data and are culturally authentic, making them perfect for creative projects like novels, games, and character creation. For any commercial use, please refer to our Terms of Service.
